From the Bench to the Bar: Translating Knowledge into Practice

During the week of April 2, 2012 HSR lead a seminar on Leadership and Negotiation in Public Policy at the University of Chicago, Harris School of Public Policy. Introduced for the first time this spring by Professor Joseph Antoun, the course builds on and complements the technical skills that the students learn in the core curriculum courses of the MPP program at the Harris School of Public Policy Studies. Lectures will present various leadership styles and provide students with practical recommendations to improve their performance as potential leaders in Public Policy.
Key questions addressed include: Why is leadership central to Public Policy? Can anyone be a leader? What are the characteristics of a successful leader? How to evaluate leadership? What is the role and importance of followership? How to become a better leader? Students are challenged to discuss negotiation strategies and tactics and are provided with an efficient negotiation tool to help them prepare for and succeed during negotiations. The new course incorporates case-based learning and requires students to apply their newly acquired leadership and negotiation strategies along with policy analysis skills acquired in previous courses.
