Washington D.C. On July 3, Al Jazeera Arabic Network aired a special documentary on healthcare insurance in the United States and the global challenge of aging and chronic disease. The documentary featured footage shot at the Buck Institute, highlighting discussions about the importance of research and the latest discoveries in the field of aging and chronic disease. Brian Kennedy, CEO of Buck Institute and Joseph Antoun, CEO of Health Systems Reform and and Adj. Pr. of Health Policy at the Buck Institute were interviewed at Al Jazeera’s Washington D.C. studio. Dr. Antoun discussed healthcare issues in the Middle East and North Africa and the impact of the Arab Spring on local health care systems reform: “We are witnessing a policy reform spring in the Arab countries which did not experience the Arab Spring revolutions. Indeed, many Arab nations feeling the pressure of a potential revolutionary spring are currently financing social reforms and services including healthcare." Dr. Antoun also advised Arab governments to focus on citizens’ healthcare education and primary care in order to mitigate the health and financial impact of chronic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
