Leadership and Negotiations in Healthcare: Strategies and Tactics

Article From: Buck Institute News

Pr. Joseph Antoun, Adjunct faculty at Buck, kicked off the new Buck Institute Career Development Course on Thursday March 8, 2012, leading a well-attended session on “Leadership and Negotiations in Healthcare: Strategies and Tactics.”  Career Development Courses are designed to help Buck researchers, especially postdoctoral fellows, advance their scientific careers.

This session introduced Buck scientists to two major ‘soft skills’ that are critically important to those wishing to take leadership roles in their laboratories or institutions.  The first part of the presentation presented various leadership styles, latest trends in leadership and practical recommendations to improve performance.  The second part of the training discussed negotiation strategies and tactics, providing researchers with an efficient negotiation tool to help them prepare for and succeed during negotiations.  Three cases were presented and discussed, giving participants an opportunity to apply the skills covered in the course.

In addition to his appointment at the Buck Institute, Dr. Antoun is a visiting fellow at the Department of Social Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is also the Co-Director of the Center for Health Policy at the University of Chicago where he teaches health systems and pharmaceutical policy. He is also the CEO of Health Systems Reform S.A.L., a boutique advisory company aimed at improving public health through health policy.

Dr. Antoun got his MD and MS from Saint Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon. He received a Masters’ in Public Policy from Harvard University and has completed Health System Financing and Management studies at Johns Hopkins University. His recent research and teaching activities are focused on health systems and system reform in the Middle East, Russia and other ex-Soviet countries. He has numerous publications and is currently writing a book on Health Systems and New Public Management in healthcare.
